Vogels in het volksgeloof

Vogels in het volksgeloof- Johan Boussauw |MOOSE in the CITY

As long as we humans have existed, we have attributed special meaning to all kinds of birds. The nightingale as the bringer of spring, the cuckoo as a bird of fortune-telling and prophecy, the magpie as a powerful messenger of change and transformation, for example. Birds in culture is about our birds in a broad cultural-historical context: it is full of historical stories from the folk belief, ancient science, supplemented with folk customs and quotes. The author describes extensively per species or species group subjects such as folk belief, superstition, folk meteorology, folk medicine, magic, myths, hunting, naming, fairy tales and legends.

For decades the author has collected material from medieval encyclopedias, books on popular beliefs and old documents. He has found a large number of appropriate prints, from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century.

Johan Boussauw (1953) is a graphic artist, with a great interest in medieval prints. This book is the result of a combination of a love for old books, an extensive knowledge of nature and his interest in folklore.
