Vrije Vogels Van Rotterdam

Designed in HOLLAND

Let's do Goods socks are designed by artists with lived experience in the field of homelessness, addiction or psychiatry. They are also called outsider artists. Let's do Goods gives them a stage for their story and work on their socks.

On top of this, a pair of socks is donated to peoples in need for every pair of socks sold, in collaboration with The Salvation Army, Quiet, Food Banks and local partners.

Discover the artist Gily Nelom:
Gily comes from Suriname, Paramaribo. From the age of 12 to 16 he studied art at the Nola Hatterman Art Academy. As a 17-year-old boy he moves to the Netherlands. Making art gave Gily peace of mind and it is his outlet. But after his arrival in the Netherlands, making art disappears into the background, he no longer touched paper and paint. Making a quick buck and partying are the new outlets and this wild lifestyle eventually became his trap. He lost his place, lost his home and had to reinvent himself. Through the Salvation Army, Gily came into contact with the Nico Adriaans Foundation, so that he is slowly getting his life back on track. He picks up making art again in order to, as he puts it himself, “paint away his short fuse.” Making art is finding your own way because you have to develop your own style. This quest helped him to find the right path again. Since 2016, Gily has been a regular and welcome guest at Via Kunst. Via Kunst is the studio in Rotterdam that Let's do Goods works with. In the meantime he has been able to exhibit in the Zuidplein theater and the Museum Rotterdam. The next step in his big dream is to one day be able to work from his own studio. Birds are a recurring subject in Gily's work. For him, the bird symbolizes freedom. Rotterdam is his city!
