Designed in the NETHERLANDS

In 1862, Morris drew his first wallpaper design, and he didn't even have to leave his garden to do it. "Trellis" depicts the rose trellis at Red House, the home in Bexleyheath designed for him by his friend Philip Webb, featuring wooden slats, climbing roses growing through them, and a few small insects and beetles. Morris did not draw the birds himself; those were the work of Webb.

Although it was his first design, it was only the third to be printed, and it was not an immediate success. In the 1860s, there was a desire for wallpaper that appeared three-dimensional and lifelike; the flat, almost naive *Trellis* design did not fit this trend. More than 160 years later, Morris & Co. still sells it, tastes eventually caught up with the design.

On the sock, the paper’s cream-colored background remains, overlaid with Webb’s trellis, red roses, and blue birds. Knitted in rather than printed, the colors are embedded within the fabric, ensuring they do not fade.
