Drinkbare rivieren

Maarten van der schaaf & LI An

During her childhood in a densely built-up suburb of Rotterdam, Li An Phoa was already marveling at the wilderness in the neighborhood, the moss between the paving stones and the herons by the ditches. As a twenty-something, she moves into the real wilderness. During a canoe trip through the Canadian Arctic, she discovers that she can drink directly from the river. But when she returns three years later, she can no longer: the river is poisoned, the ecosystem disturbed. That experience has stuck with her. Since then, Phoa has been drawing attention to drinkable rivers and urging people to take action.

In this book she takes the reader with her on her adventures along rivers on four continents, combining travelogue, memoir, reportage and contemplation. On foot, Phoa covers more than 15,000 kilometers and she experiences the deep connection between everything that lives. With her original perspective and disarming approach, she continuously asks the question: how can our rivers become drinkable again?
