The solitary bee is a very useful insect to have in the garden. In the category of bees, the ordinary honey bee is the best known. However, there are many more types of solitary bees. These are fully self-sufficient for their maintenance and look forward to a suitable nesting place for offspring. Solitary bees will never sting because they do not have to defend a colony or honey supply. That is why it is interesting to attract solitary bees to the garden to pollinate the flowers. By placing or hanging this educational solitary beehive in your garden, you give them an ideal place to overwinter or to nest.
When the nest box is found, the female goes in search of pollen that she brings in one of the holes where she wants to make the nest. In the pollen she puts an egg and then she blocks the hole with a mixture of mud and saliva. This creates a room in which the egg can grow to larva, which feeds on the pollen and then pupates to adult. A number of these rooms are being built per hole.
This way the pupa overwinter safely and in the spring the pupated bees bite their way out. The bees that are born in this nesting box often come back to this cupboard to put their own eggs in it and so the cycle starts again and you can count on a good pollination of your flowers and plants from early spring. Due to the use of insecticides, the population of solitary bees has drastically decreased in recent years. They are naturally attracted by cracks and holes in wood, but due to the construction of more modern gardens and more intensive agriculture, these are becoming more and more difficult to find and will gratefully make use of this hive.
